This is one of my most difficult reviews. Today we had our last meal at Konbu. The owners and staff will be retiring, truly a sad day for the loyal followers they had. I have been a loyal once a week customer for 21 years, that's over 1000 times eating at the highest quality sushi restaurants that has ever existed. Congratulations to the James, Genie and all the staff. It's well deserved for all the great food and memories you gave my family and fellow diners. Looking forward to the new owners sliding into a legendary role.
It's been 8 years since I've been to Konbu and it is still the exact same which is fantastic. The service is quick and the menu is perfection. I've always gotten the titanic and rich and famous specials rolls. The titanic is shrimp tempura with spicy tuna on top. The rich and famous is lobster tempura with avocado and wrapped with rice paper. Absolutely delicious!
I love Konbu, our weekly sushi spot that always is a hit. The nutty tuna is INCREDIBLE I could lick the plate clean. The fish is always so fresh and the rolls are huge
My review from years ago hasn't changed much. Still our go to even after trying other places. Sashimi are cut thick, is that a complaint? Possibly cut thinner and give more pieces. Miso soup is full of flavor. The servers have been here forever and are very pleasant and efficient. One time when the sushi bar was very busy and service was slowed, we were given a bowl of edamame to make up for the delay.
I'm basically a walk away from this place, so I'm a bit biased. Also, this review is for before reconstruction and new management comes in around December-January 2025. This is more or less a standard sushi place. My Dad likes the chirashi. They're pretty good on raw fish, overall. It's generally pricey, so I would suggest coming here for occasions. I don't know how the new management will do things, but I've known this place to have a lunch hour, so if it still has that, you can take advantage of that if you just want a relatively cheaper meal for the afternoon. Enough room to dine in, and on one of my walks, I did notice the place was refurbished, so I'm excited to visit again when I get the chance. Before, the place was nice to dine in, so as long as they keep that standard up along with the good food, I'm not docking it down a star. If they keep to the same schedule, expect there to be downtime in between opening hours, so study the opening hours closely and make sure to do your civic duty and update the Google Maps, etc. in case it's inaccurate.
